Top tips that could help sell your house more quickly

If you want to sell your property quickly and at the best possible price try to make your home as attractive as possible for potential buyers.


Declan Moore, Operations Director at Progressive Building Society suggests putting yourself in somebody else’s shoes and taking a good, hard look at your home. For instance, you might know that the peeling wallpaper in the hall is just wear and tear, but a viewer could think it is hiding something more sinister underneath.

Taking these top tips on board could provide assistance.

Stay positive when you’re showing viewers around your home. Tell them all the things that you loved when you bought the house. Perhaps it was the open plan kitchen and living room – or the morning light that floods in through the windows? You don’t need to talk about the technical details of the house – that’s what a building survey is for.

Keep it clean People are often able to overlook décor or furnishings they don’t like, but no-one wants to see round a dirty house – so make sure you give your home a good thorough clean before your first viewer arrives!

De-clutter . Viewers will want to see round each room, but they may also want to have a peek inside your cupboards – so it’s a good idea to spend some time de-cluttering. For example, if your kitchen cupboards are overflowing, it will look like you don’t have much storage. Ask friends and family to store extra items for you until your house has sold.

Give it the show home treatment: Whatever style of house you live in, you can give it the show home treatment. Fill some vases with fresh flowers, create stylish displays of books and magazines on the coffee table and if it’s cold outside, make sure your house is comfortable and inviting.

Create a spacious feel : If your lounge has a sofa you need to squeeze past to get into the room or the spare bedroom is filled with furniture, move the extra pieces out, as too much furniture can make a room feel much smaller than it is. In order to create a more spacious feel, store what you don’t really need.

These simple tips could help your house appeal to more people. And the more people you get through your door, the better the chances of selling your house.
