BJ Spencer, the interior designer behind some of Philly’s most of-the-moment addresses, sketches out the chicest elements for at-home entertaining.
“I love entertaining friends and family during the holiday season,” says interior designer BJ Spencer of BJS Designs. As the creative mastermind behind some of Philly’s chicest homes, an eye for design is practically in her DNA: Spencer’s parents are renowned fashion designers Albert and Pearl Nipon.
“I love to accent my table with homemade centerpieces made up of pillar and taper candles,” she says, adding that Crate & Barrel is great for shiny finds. “Metallics—silver, gold, or copper—add an element of luxury that complements any décor.”
Playing with lighting can impart a warm holiday feel, she says. “Try integrating more lighted elements inside and out during the holidays to set the scene including pillars, tapers, votives, spheres, strings of lights, and lanterns from Restoration Hardware, or illuminated containers of twigs.” She also suggests thinking beyond the old standards. “Do away with the usual pinecones and evergreens—instead, try something more whimsical. Add something that reflects your personality by introducing non-traditional colors like teal and green with unexpected textures. Think of using a topiary with peacock feathers, or beach-inspired garland for the mantel or buffet, or a tablescape of neutrals and sky blue with seashell accents.”
In the end, she says, “There’s nothing better than hosting a big dinner party and joining everyone around the table with a nice fire and some music.”
